Limestone is used to remove sulfur dioxide in coal plants. Sulfur dioxide is a heavy, pungent, colorless gas formed primarily by the combustion of coal, oil, and diesel fuels. The process is known as Flue Gas Desulfurization, which is a technology that employs a sorbent, usually lime or limestone, to remove the sulfur dioxide from the gases produced by burning fossil fuels.
