Improved recovery is the extraction of additional petroleum beyond primary recovery, from naturally occurring reservoirs by supplementing the natural forces in the reservoir. It includes water flooding, secondary processes, tertiary processes and any other means of supplementing natural reservoir recovery processes. Technology advances in IOR/EOR may prove to be what staves off the “peak” in global oil production.
Layer of rock, sediment or soil that does not allow water to pass through. This could be caused by a lack of pore space or pore spaces that are so small that water molecules have difficulty passing through.
Impermeable formations, such as shales and siltstones, tend to be finer grained or of a mixed grain size, with smaller, fewer, or less interconnected pores.
