Barge drilling rigs are mobile drilling platforms that are submersible and are built to work in seven to 20 feet of water. They are towed by tugboats to the drill site with the derrick lying down. The lower hull is then submerged by flooding compartments until it rests on the river or sea floor. The derrick is then raised and drilling operations are conducted with the barge resting on the bottom.

Fluid flow in the borehole from one zone into another in response to pressure differences between the zones. Any time the wellbore pressure rises above the average pressure in any zone, backflow will occur. The term is often mistakenly called cross flow

AIPN is a non-profit organization founded in 1981 to enhance the professionalism of cross-border energy negotiators throughout the world. It is comprised of approximately 2200 members in over 80 countries, representing numerous international oil and gas companies, host governments, law firms and academic institutions. Members come from many different disciplines (commercial, technical, academic, and legal) and represent many different international and host governments, oil gas and energy companies, and national and multilateral governmental authorities). The balancing between the amount of gas that is used by consumers and the amount of gas that is put into the system by the gas producers. The safety of the system depends upon its consistent balancing.

Barium sulfate; a mineral frequently used to increase the weight or density of drilling mud.  Its relative density is 4.2 (or 4.2 times denser than water).

The pressure resulting from restriction of full natural flow of oil or gas. Pressure against which a fluid is flowing. May be composed of friction in pipes, restrictions in pipes, valves, pressure in vessels to which fluid is flowing, hydrostatic head, or other resistance to fluid flow.

For mobile offshore drilling rigs, weight added to make the rig more seaworthy, increase its draft, or sink it to the seafloor.   Seawater is usually used for ballast, but sometimes concrete or iron is used additionally to lower the rig’s center of gravity permanently. A ballast is also a voyage with no cargo on board to get a ship in position for the next loading port or docking
