Connection between a subsea pipeline and the platform riser, or between the terminations of two pipelines

A volume of mud that is more dense than the mud in the drillpipe and wellbore annulus. A slug is used to displace mud out of the upper part of the drillpipe before pulling pipe out of the hole. (2) A small volume of fluid, often of a higher density than the main body of fluid, within the circulating or production-fluid system that influences the flow or production characteristics of the well. A slug may be placed to ensure that fluids are naturally drained from a tubing string as it is pulled from the wellbore. A floating vessel that is supported primarily on large pontoon-like structures submerged below the sea surface. The operating decks are elevated 100 or more feet above the pontoons on large steel columns. This design has the advantage of submerging most of the area of components in contact with the sea and minimizing loading from waves and wind. Semisubmersibles can operate in a wide range of water depths, including deep water. They are usually anchored with six to twelve anchors tethered by strong chains and wire cables, which are computer controlled to maintain station keeping. The semi-submersibles present less surface area to waves and so are less susceptible to pitch and roll motions but are still subject to heave motions and are not designed to store large quantities of oil.

Discovered in 1988, the Shtokman gas and condensate field, belonging to Gazprom is located in the central part of the Barents Sea. The field will be the resource base for Russian gas exports to Europe via the Nord Stream gas pipeline. In addition, Gazprom has stated that from 2014 they are interested in serving the North American market with LNG from its proposed Shtokman project

Are formed in horizontal layers when sediments from rivers are washed into lakes or oceans. The weight of the additional sediments compresses the earlier deposits and minerals cement them together into sedimentary rocks such as sandstone, limestone (carbonate) and shale.

The market for offshore exploration is now the hottest section in the shipbuilding industry. Most new orders seem to go to Asian shipbuilders, with Singapore and China benefiting but with South Korea’s 3 big shipyards (Samsung, Daewoo and Hyundai) getting the lion’s share of orders. As oil prices have surged (2008) drill ships have been booked for the next 5 years and per day costs of some of the deep water rigs has risen from $150,000 a day in 2002 to $600,000 a day in 2008
