Such as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), which can reach efficiencies as high as 70%-80% and MicroCHP schemes which could bring about one of the more dramatic shifts in cutting consumption and reducing emissions. MicroCHP could be still more dramatic over time with such units, which replace the traditional gas-fired boiler in the home, providing around 50% of a household’s electricity needs as well as the usual heating and hot water supply. Energy efficiency from some MicroGen unit is over 90% compared to 55% from the best performing large-scale power stations. And CO2 emissions are cut by 1.5 tons per average household per year.
