An engineering study based on test work and engineering analysis, which presents enough information to determine whether or not the project should be advanced to the final engineering and construction stage. It is a “go/no-go” decision point.

Subdivisions of rock layers used primarily by paleontologists who study fossils rather than by geologists who study rock formations

A break surface in brittle rock across which there is displacement. Depending on the relative direction of the displacement between the rocks, its movement is described as normal, reverse or strike-slip. The fault block above the fault surface is called the hanging wall, while the fault block below the fault is the footwall

Fault traps are formed by movement of rock along a fault line. In some cases, the reservoir rock has moved opposite a layer of impermeable rock. The impermeable rock thus prevents the oil from escaping. In other cases, the fault itself can be a very effective trap.

When clays within a fault zone are smeared as the layers of rock slip past one another it is known as fault gouge

Number of fatalities per 100 million man hours worked. Fatality is defined as death due to work related injury or illness. The fatality rate is the number of deaths per 1000 workers.
