Concept is to improve use of renewable energy so that when one source (wind, solar) is not available in one specific area, consumers can be linked up via a supergrid to another source to ensure continuity of supply. There are currently plans for a massive electricity grid dedicated to uniting the varied sources of renewable energy available in northern Europe with nine countries working together on the project as of January 2010 and hope to have the grid working within the next decade in order to help meet the EU’s pledge to have 20% of electricity from renewables by 2020. Estimated cost of building a grid connecting countries across the North Sea region including the Baltic Sea, Irish Sea and English Channel would cost in the region of $30-$40 billion.
