Natural gas and oil are kindling substances which are used by industrial and private consumers. There are alternatives to natural gas and oil such as diesel, gasoil, hydroelectric energy, solar energy, biofuels and others. Each substance has its particular advantages and disadvantages and price volatility

More and more governments are offering producers and consumers incentives in the form of tax relief and premiums. Incentives or proposed incentives include production tax credit for investments in wind energy, biomass, hydropower, and geothermal power generation facilities; investment credit for businesses that install solar or fuel cell equipment; tax credits for homeowners who install energy-efficient furnaces, windows and insulation; tax deductions to builders who construct more energy-efficient homes and to businesses that make their buildings more energy-efficient; and give manufacturers tax credits to lower production costs for energy-saving appliances.

Could mean either alternative to petroleum or usually refers to alternative to fossil fuels or renewable energy

Refers to back-up fuel required by for instance a natural gas generated IPP according to the terms of his license, to ensure that the plant can continue to operate if gas is not available for any reason. Alternatively, it is the fuel which an interruptible customer stores ready for use if his gas supply is interrupted.

Alternative energy refers to energy sources which are not based on the burning of fossil fuels or the splitting of atoms. Some definitions even include nuclear energy since this does not have the harmful effect of carbon emissions.

The renewed interest in this field of study comes from the undesirable effects of pollution both from burning fossil fuels and from nuclear waste by-products. Alternatives include: wind power, solar power, geothermal, tides and hydroelectric and biomass.

The term alternative energy is being used more and more interchangeably with renewable energy.
