Wash boring
The wash boring method is frequently used in sands and silts to either advance a casing or collect soil samples. Water is pumped down the drill rods under pressure and discharges through ports in the drill bit and carries the soil up to the surface in the annulus between the rod and the boring wall or casing. |

Wash over (v)
to release pipe that is stuck in the hole by running washover pipe. The washover pipe must have an outside diameter small enough to fit into the borehole but an inside diameter large enough to fit over the outside diameter of the stuck pipe. A rotary shoe, which cuts away the formation, mud, or whatever is sticking the pipe, is made up on the bottom joint of the washover pipe, and the assembly is lowered into the hole. Rotation of the assembly frees the stuck pipe. Several washovers may have to be made if the stuck portion is very long. |

Waste heat; Residual heat
Waste heat, or rather residual heat refers to heat produced by equipment and industrial processes for which no useful application is found, and is regarded as a waste by-product. Power stations and manufacturing plants waste a staggering amount of energy, with power plants sometimes wasting two-thirds of the energy they produce. If the heat is at a such low temperature that it is not possible to recuperate it and generate with it any useful energy, or work (in whatever form), then it is not "wasted" (Carnot's Law). Only if it is at a sufficiently high temperature where, if desired, it may be utilized for another process and this is not done, can it be defined as residual heat |

תחנת כוח המונעת בעקר ע"י קיטור. המים מתחממים והופכים לקיטור שלאחר מכן מסובב את הטורבינה המניעה גנרטור החשמלי, כמו למשל בטורבינות מסוג מחזור רנקין שעושות שימוש באדי מים (כלומר קיטור). ניתן לנצל זורמים נוספים להעברת חום, כגון זורם אורגני המשמש את תחנות הכוח של אורמת שפועלות בטכנולוגיית ORC (מחזור רנקין אורגני) ומותאמות לייצור חשמל ממקור חום בטמפרטורות נמוכות. אך במקרה זה נמצא כי בכפוף לחוק קרנו (אם החום שרוי בטמפרטורה כה נמוכה, עד כדי שאיננה מאפשרת להשיבו ולנצלו לייצור אנרגיה שמישה מכל סוג שהוא או עבודה בכל צורה שהיא, אין להגדיר אותו כחום שיורי), מוצדק כלכלית לעשות זאת עם מקור חום מתון יחסית בלבד, כלומר חום גיאותרמי בטמפרטורות 180-200 מעלות צלסיוס. אורמת ערכה גם ניסוי להפקת חשמל מבריכות סולאריות בעלות גרדיאנט מליחות, אך הדרגה הנמוכה של חום זה – כ-90-95 מעלות צלסיוס, פחות מצדיקה זאת מבחינה כלכלית. |
